The
Oxford & Cambridge First Overland Expedition is celebrating
the 50th anniversary of its arrival in Singapore courtesy
of Cathay Pacific, which is celebrating
its 60th anniversary. Together with the support of the Land
Rover Owners of Malaysia club, the Land
Rover Owners of Singapore club and Land
Rover Asia, the 5 surviving members took part
in a golden anniversary celebration drive from Kuala
Lumpur to Singapore on Saturday March 4, 2006. The route
retraced the Expedition's journey from the Malaysian
capital city to Orchard Road before carrying on to the
new Land Rover showroom on Alexandra Road for a dinner
reception.
There
was a huge gathering of Land Rover from the Singapore
side at the Old Ford Factory, who were kind enough to
let over 30 Land Rovers gather as HE Alan Collins
CMG, the British High Commissioner to Singapore,
met with the 5 Overlanders, before the Singapore Land
Rovers departed
to join up with the convoy from Malaysia.
The
final turnout was over 60 Land Rovers, ranging from the
latest offerings from Solihull to a quintet of Series
1 vehicles,
including one built in the same year the original Expedition
crossed the causeway bridge linking Malaysia and Singapore.
While
in Singapore, Antony Barrington Brown, Pat Murphy and
Tim Slessor took part in narrating the audiobook
of First Overland, now available. Click
